Whitmer Official Admits Burning Public Records

Freedom Fund: Rescind Violations, Refund COVID Fines, Reveal What Whitmer Is Trying To Cover Up

LANSING, Mich.  An alarming new report from Detroit News journalist Beth LeBlanc published today states that officials in Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s administration burned documents and deleted emails related to violations and fines they imposed on workplaces as a result of Whitmer’s COVID orders.

When the target of one violation threatened to legally depose the agency director to uncover what was in the burned public records, Whitmer’s administration suddenly dismissed the fine.

“The dismissal by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration came more than a year after it was issued and over a week after an hours-long deposition in which an inspector admitted to destroying emails and notes related to a citation against the city. During the Oct. 12 deposition, according to a transcript, the inspector waffled when answering questions about the influence of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s overturned executive orders on MIOSHA's COVID-related citations…

“When asked about notes he took during the investigation and interviews, Hartman said he burned them. The inspector also said he destroyed emails from his supervisor regarding the case.”

“Gretchen Whitmer spent months violating her own COVID orders while deploying state officials to target and fine everyday Michiganders doing their best to survive a global pandemic,” said Tori Sachs, executive director of The Michigan Freedom Fund. “Newly uncovered legal evidence has revealed that Whitmer’s team has been deleting emails and literally burning public records. Whitmer should apologize and immediately rescind and dismiss every one of MIOSHA’s fines and penalties related to her unconstitutional COVID-19 orders.”

“During her campaign for governor, Whitmer promised to make state government more open, transparent, and accountable. Instead, the culture she has created empowers and allows officials to burn documents and delete emails,” Sachs continued. “The destruction of documents and emails should be fully investigated and Whitmer should reveal what her administration is trying to cover up.”
